When should you bring your child to the orthodontist?

When should you bring your child to the orthodontist?

We recommend that your child is examined by an orthodontist at about age 7.

Your child’s teeth might appear straight but there could be problems beneath the surface:

A bad bite, poorly positioned adult teeth, jaw issues and so on. There could also be issues brought on by thumb sucking

What will we look at?

Baby teeth give a good indication of where permanent teeth will be positioned. That’s why it’s important to have Dr Michelle Browne examine your child’s mouth while they still have baby teeth.

Its a good idea to see an orthodontist if your child :

  • Has lost baby teeth early
  • Has difficulty eating
  • Has a tendency to thumb suck
  • Has crowded teeth
  • Has a clicking jaw
  • Has a tendency to bites cheeks when eating
  • Has jaws that appear too far forward or too far back

Looking after Invisalign Teen aligners

Your Invisalign Teen aligners have been delivered and now you’re on your way to a great smile. But you’re wondering: How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

Proper cleaning essential for keeping your Invisalign aligners invisible and odour free.

Here’s Your Smile Specialist’s list of Do’s and Don’ts to keep your aligners in great condition.

Do:
1. Rinse your aligners every time you take them out.
2. Soak your aligners in denture cleaner every day.
3. Brush and floss after every meal- you don’t want food trapped between your aligners and teeth.
4. Use an anti-bacterial mouth wash.
5. Brush your aligners gently to remove any food or plaque.

Don’t:
1. Take them out to eat and drink (apart from water)
2. Don’t clean them with toothpaste- that can dull them.
3. Clean with coloured soaps, they can stain the aligners.

BRACES AND SPORTS

Have your children joined the local GAA or rugby club? At Your Smile Specialist, we’re always asked:  “Can my child play sports while wearing braces?” It is an important question for kids and parents. Yes – you can wear braces and play sports. The real question is how?
For braces patients playing sports, we recommend that they use an orthodontic mouthguard to protect their mouth from any potential injury. With the use of a proper orthodontic mouthguard, any contact sport can be played with braces. Even in light contact sports such as baseball, a mouthguard is a good idea to protect the smile you’re working so hard for.

What is an Orthodontic Mouthguard?

An orthodontic mouthguard is made from silicone and cushions your lips from bumping against your teeth. It also protects your brackets and softens the impact from any contact that could damage how the braces adhere to your teeth. Orthodontic mouthguards are typically larger than more common, non-orthodontic mouthguards in order to have extra space for the braces to fit.

What Happens If I Get Injured While Wearing Braces?

If you currently wear braces and get hurt while playing sports, it’s best to call your smile specialist as soon as possible. From there, we can recommend whether an emergency appointment is necessary.  This is what can happen if an orthodontic mouthguard isn’t worn: broken brackets, bleeding gums, and even fractured teeth.

Another option

At Your Smile Specialist, we believe that Invisalign Teen is a  safer option for teenagers playing sports.  If your child plays a sport that does’t require that he or she wear a mouthguard, then your child can simply wear their Invisalign trays while practicing and playing. If your child were to wear metal braces while playing a sport, then those brackets can cause even a light bump to turn bloody if the bracket cuts the inside of your child’s mouth. Those bumps can also knock the wires and brackets that make up traditional braces loose and cause frequent emergency trips to your orthodontist to repair your child’s traditional braces.

And if your child plays a sport that needs a proper gum shield? No problem, just take the aligner out and pop in a gum shield. It’s much the safer option with no restrictions on keeping fit and healthy.
